This will be the first Olympics for Shattenkirk, who will join St. Louis Blues teammates David Backes and T.J. Oshie on the US squad. In his fourth NHL season and third full campaign with St. Louis, Shattenkirk has quickly developed into one of the league's better offensive defensemen. He had 43 points in each of his first two seasons and has eight goals and 28 assists this season. A power-play specialist who figures to see time on that unit in Sochi, Shattenkirk has accumulated 62 points - including 15 goals - on the man advantage in his first 257 regular-season NHL games. Shattenkirk was drafted 14th overall by Colorado in 2007, and after three seasons at Boston University and 13 AHL games, made his NHL debut Nov. 4, 2010. He appeared in 46 games for the Avalanche before he was traded to St. Louis on Feb. 19, 2011, in a swap of first-rounders with fellow defenseman Erik Johnson heading to Colorado. Shattenkirk, who grew up in New Rochelle, N.Y., has represented the US internationally on several occasions, including the 2009 world juniors and 2011 world championships.
