Career Highlights:

Making his first appearance in the Olympics, the New York Rangers' rising star brings steady and dependable play on defense to go with his outstanding skating ability, which should enhance his value to Team USA on the larger ice surfaces used in international competition. In his fourth NHL season, McDonagh has recorded 20 goals and 70 assists in 228 career games, and he could prove to be an even bigger offensive force with more room to skate in Sochi. A career plus-56 in the pros, McDonagh was selected for a United States team that will bring impressive depth to the Games, and he'll likely play a leading role for a defensive corps that includes fellow NHLers Ryan Suter, John Carlson, Justin Faulk, Cam Fowler, Paul Martin, Brooks Orpik and Kevin Shattenkirk. McDonagh has eight goals and 22 assists in 59 games, leaving him only two points shy of matching his career best as his offensive game has continued to evolve. McDonagh has played in three international tournaments. He helped the United States to the silver medal in the IIHF World U18 Championship in 2007 and played in the World U20 Championship in '09 and the world championships in '11. He recorded six assists in 13 games in those competitions and was a plus-4. McDonagh played three seasons at the University of Wisconsin - two of them with childhood friend and current US Olympic and Rangers teammate Derek Stepan - and spent only part of one season in the minors before being called up by New York in January 2011.
