Toliver helps Mystics jolt Liberty, advance to semis
(TSX / STATS) -- Kristi Toliver scored 32 points and set a WNBA playoff record with nine 3-pointers as the Washington Mystics beat the New York Liberty 82-68 on Sunday at Madison Square Garden to advance to the semifinal round.
Game 1 of the best-of-five series against the Minnesota Lynx is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
New York, which had not lost since Aug. 4 in Los Angeles, saw its 10-game win streak -- and its season -- come to a disappointing end.
Elena Delle Donne compiled a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Mystics.
Tina Charles led the third-seeded Liberty with 18 points. Bria Hartley and Epiphanny Prince scored 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Toliver sparked a 16-0 third-quarter run that erased a 14-point deficit. Toliver was unstoppable after the first period as she connected on 9 of 16 3-point attempts.
Trailing 41-35 entering the third period, the Mystics outscored the Liberty 25-10. Tolliver was responsible for 16 of those points.
The sixth-seeded Mystics were down 31-23 in the second when Tolliver connected on her first 3 of the game at the 6:11 mark. She followed that with another 3-pointer and then another 25-foot jumper as the Mystics cut into the Liberty lead heading into halftime.
Washington completed the comeback when Toliver knocked down a 3-point jumper at the 6:39 mark to give the Mystics their first lead since the opening minutes.
From there it was all Washington as the Mystics opened up a 20-point fourth-quarter lead.
New York's WNBA-best defense was on display in the first period when the Liberty held the Mystics to 19 percent (4-for-21) from the field. Delle Donne (three) and Ivory Latta accounted for all four baskets.
Washington was missing easy shots, which led to transition baskets by New York. Charles scored eight first-quarter points as the Liberty were in control for the first 10 minutes.
The second period was a different story.
The Liberty, who were up 11 at the end of the first period, extended the lead to 29-15 on a 3-pointer by Charles.
But then Toliver ignited an 11-2 run to make the score 31-26. Toliver tallied 12 points in the quarter as the Mystics went into halftime trailing 41-35.
