South Carolina tops Mississippi State for first national title

(TSX / STATS) -- DALLAS -- South Carolina fended off Southeastern Conference rival Mississippi State for the biggest prize in women's college basketball.

The Gamecocks led by as many as 14 points in the second half, then survived a Bulldogs charge to claim a 67-55 victory in the NCAA Tournament championship game on Sunday evening at the American Airlines Center.

In doing so, South Carolina (33-4), making its second Final Four appearance under head coach Dawn Staley, won its first national championship.


South Carolina Gs Davis, Gray declare for WNBA Draft

(TSX / STATS) -- Two starters who helped South Carolina win its first women's national title have declared for the WNBA draft, Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley confirmed on Tuesday.

Junior guards Kaela Davis and Allisha Gray elected to bypass their final seasons of eligibility in favor of professional careers. Saturday is the deadline to withdraw from the draft.

South Carolina dug out of a nine-point hole at halftime with a momentum-shifting third quarter and went on to a 62-53 victory in the NCAA Tournament semifinals on Friday night at the American Airlines Center.


Mississippi State ends UConn's 111-game win streak

(TSX / STATS) -- DALLAS, Texas -- Mississippi State brought Connecticut and its 111-game winning streak crashing down.

Guard Morgan William hit a 10-foot jumper at the buzzer and the Bulldogs grasped a 66-64 victory in the NCAA Tournament semifinals that shocked the college basketball nation on Friday night at the American Airlines Center.

(TSX / STATS) -- DALLAS, Texas -- As much as basketball fans, and Mississippi State women's hoops fans in particular, might want to see the Bulldogs challenge the Connecticut women to a close game in Friday's national semifinal, there's just no escaping recent history.

Last season, the Huskies cruised to their fourth consecutive national championship, winning each of their 2016 NCAA Tournament games by at least 29 points. But no game was more lopsided in that stretch than Connecticut's 60-point victory over fifth-seeded Mississippi State in the Sweet 16.

UConn buries Oregon, powers into Final Four

(TSX / STATS) -- Napheesa Collier scored 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and top overall seed Connecticut blew past 10th-seeded Oregon 90-52 Monday in the Bridgeport (Conn.) Region final at Webster Bank Arena.

Gabby Williams added 25 points, and Katie Lou Samuelson finished with eight points and five steals for the Huskies (36-0), who advance to the Final Four for the 10th straight season. UConn will take on No. 2 seed Mississippi State on Friday in Dallas.


Mississippi State upsets Baylor in OT to reach Final Four

(TSX / STATS) -- Morgan William poured in a career-high 41 points, and second-seeded Mississippi State advanced to the Final Four for the first time in program history with a 94-85 overtime win over top-seed Baylor on Sunday in the Oklahoma City Region final at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

William, a diminutive junior point guard, hit six 3-pointers, including two in overtime, and handed out seven assists without a turnover. Junior guard Victoria Vivians added 24 points for the Bulldogs, who led for the majority of the game but needed overtime to finish of the Lady Bears.


Stanford edges Notre Dame to reach 13th Final Four

(TSX / STATS) -- The Stanford Cardinal seized momentum in the second half and rode it to a 76-75 victory over Notre Dame on Sunday at Lexington, Ky., and a berth in the Final Four.

Stanford, the No. 2 seed in the Lexington Region, trailed by 13 early in the third quarter, but came storming back to force a back-and-forth battle with the top-seeded Fighting Irish in the closing minutes at Rupp Arena.


NCAA women's roundup: UConn rolls into Elite Eight

(TSX / STATS) -- Napheesa Collier scored 27 points and undefeated and top-seeded Connecticut gave its coach a milestone win with a comfortable 86-71 victory over No. 4 seed UCLA on Saturday in a Bridgeport Region semifinal at Bridgeport, Conn.

The Huskies (35-0), who won their 110th straight game, will face No. 10 seed Oregon on Monday, with the winner advancing to the Final Four.
