Cubs' Lester to DL, expected back soon

(TSX / STATS) -- The Chicago Cubs placed left-hander Jon Lester on the 10-day disabled list Friday with left lat tightness and shoulder fatigue, but the injury is not expected to be season-ending.

Lester was pulled in the second inning of Thursday afternoon's game against the Cincinnati Reds due to the injury and saw a team doctor after the game. He allowed nine runs (seven earned) in 1 2/3 innings as the Reds outlasted the Chicago Cubs 13-10.

"There's no minimum or maximum, just that it's a 10-day stay and then we'll figure it out," Cubs manager Joe Maddon told reporters Friday of Lester's return.

Marrone: Jaguars have QB competition

(TSX / STATS) -- The Jacksonville Jaguars' starting quarterback job is now open for competition after Blake Bortles' second consecutive mediocre preseason outing.

Head coach Doug Marrone told reporters after the Jaguars' 12-8 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at EverBank Field on Thursday night that Bortles and Chad Henne will share first-team reps before making a decision for the Sept. 10 season opener against the Houston Texans. (MORE)

Ex-Vandy player gets 15 years for rape

(TSX / STATS) -- Former Vanderbilt football player Brandon Banks was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Friday for his role in the 2013 gang rape of an unconscious female student.

Dealt in March, C Zuttah rejoins Ravens

(TSX / STATS) -- The Baltimore Ravens signed center Jeremy Zuttah to a two-year deal Friday after he was released by the San Francisco 49ers.

Zuttah's deal is worth nearly $4 million in base salary, with a maximum of $6 million in incentives, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. (MORE)
